Calinciuc Silvestru Iulian, a third-year PhD Candidate (2025-2026) in Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences, supervised by Univ. Prof. Habil. Ph.D. Hosu Ioan, participated in the general topics of the Sociolinguistics and Artificial Intelligence 2026 conference, held at the University of Copenhagen (see the Sociolinguistics and AI 2026 conference page) from 19 to 21 August 2026. During the event, he presented a key segment of his doctoral research in Deaf Studies.
The conference brought together doctoral students, researchers, and university professors to explore emerging new technologies, methodology design, AI challenges, and the evolution of the post-digital AI age.
He presented his workpaper on “Sign language linguistic policy: The impact of A.I. on ethical regulations within the European institutions and Council of Europe” (see the book of abstracts), discussing language planning and policy for sign language corpus planning and status in an international context, alongside evolving linguistic practices. Additionally, he discussed Artificial Intelligence applications in real-time Sign Language translation, including algorithms designed to convert SL spoken or written text, as well as AI-driven Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for facial expression analysis.
The presentation was situated within the language policy and legal framework on Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) within the European Union and the Council of Europe. These frameworks safeguard human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, protecting people with disabilities and vulnerable groups through regulations concerning accessibility and the right to information. This context highlights the direct relevance of his research in Deaf Studies toward removing communication barriers and addressing technology-related challenges.
Finally, his participation at the University of Copenhagen represents an important milestone in his doctoral trajectory.
